Winter Skincare Survival Guide: Anti-Aging Tips for Beauty Over 50

Let’s face it—winter isn’t exactly a wonderland when it comes to your skin. ❄️ Between the bone-dry air and the arctic-level winds, it’s like Mother Nature is personally challenging your skincare routine. For those of us embracing our fabulous 50s (and beyond), keeping our skin hydrated, plump, and glowing can feel like a full-time job. But fear not, beauties! I’ve got the ultimate guide to winter-proof your skin and keep those fine lines and wrinkles in check—while adding a little humor along the way.

Why Winter Hates Your Skin (And What You Can Do About It)

The combination of cold air outside and cranked-up heating indoors is like a tag team of skin sabotage. Your skin barrier, the hero responsible for keeping moisture in, can take a beating, leaving your skin dry, irritated, and looking less like a glowing goddess and more like a flaky croissant.

But don’t worry—I’m here to arm you with anti-aging tips that’ll have your skin singing even in the dead of winter.

1. Hydration Is Your Holy Grail

Let me tell you something: If you’re not drenching your skin in moisture this season, you’re doing it wrong. Winter skin needs extra hydration, and that means more than chugging water (though that helps too). Look for moisturizers packed with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin—ingredients that lock in hydration like a boss. My go-to is CeraVe's Skin Renewal Night Cream. It's light enough to wear under my base or foundation, and hydrating enough to use in my evening skincare routine.

Pro Tip: Apply your moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Trust me, your face will thank you.

2. Switch to a Gentle Cleanser

If your cleanser feels like sandpaper or smells like lemons, it’s time to retire it for the winter. Mature skin (a.k.a. our fabulous skin over 50) needs a little extra TLC. Opt for a cream-based cleanser that removes dirt without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Think of it as a warm hug for your face. I use coconut oil to wash my face. I understand that's not everyone's choice, so I recommend Paula's Choice RESIST Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid. It's a gentle cleanser yet removes makeup, skincare, and impurities.

3. Exfoliate... But Don’t Overdo It

Yes, exfoliation helps slough away dead skin cells and keep your skin glowing, but winter is NOT the time to go wild with scrubs or high-strength acids. Over-exfoliating can damage your skin barrier, leading to redness and irritation—two things no one wants. Stick to a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week, and let your moisturizer do the heavy lifting.

4. Sunscreen Isn’t Just for Summer

Here’s a myth that needs to die: “You don’t need sunscreen in the winter.” The UV rays don't take a vacation! In fact, snow can reflect sunlight, doubling your exposure. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable for keeping those wrinkles and dark spots at bay. Bonus points if your sunscreen is hydrating. I have used La Roche-Posay Anthelios AOX Daily Antioxidant Serum with SPF 50 for the past 10 years. And I get sent a lot of sunscreens to try, but I always go back to this one! It offers effective sun protection, moisturizes my skin, and has vitamin E and C in the formula. This is my holy grail sunscreen!

5. Boost Your Anti-Aging Arsenal

Winter is the perfect time to amp up your anti-aging skincare routine. Products with retinol can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, while serums with vitamin C brighten and protect against environmental damage. Just remember to layer these powerhouses under your moisturizer to avoid irritation. If you're looking for a night time treatment that will cause you to give your skin a second look in the morning because of it's healthy glow, try Murad's Retinal ReSculpt Overnight Treatment 2-3 times a week. It's my most repurchased evening skincare product!

6. Humidify Your Life

Let’s talk about the silent skin savior: a humidifier. Adding moisture back into the air can make a world of difference for your skin (and your sinuses, for that matter). Place one in your bedroom, and wake up feeling like a dewy queen instead of a dried-out raisin. The one we use in our house is the Dreo 6L Humidifier.

7. Lip Service Matters

Don’t neglect your lips! Cracked lips can add years to your look (and no one wants that). Keep a hydrating lip balm on hand, preferably one with SPF. Bonus points if it smells like vanilla or mint—because self-care should always feel a little fancy.

Embrace Your Winter Glow

Winter doesn’t have to mean dull, dry skin. With the right skincare routine, you can maintain your glow, reduce the signs of aging, and look radiant all season long. Remember, beauties: age is just a number, but hydration is forever. 💧
